Sun, 18 January 2009 Get two for the price of one! First of all, it's the monthly Flo-Union Media Lounge at The Pink Cow tonight (that's Sunday in Tokyo), and it's the return of Stone River and El Gringo providing the sonic wallpaper (as DJ Don't Panyk Danyk is fond of saying). It all starts at 8:00 p.m. and there's NO COVER CHARGE. How can you stay away? Since last month's FLO, I've DJed in Osaka at Cafe Absinthe and Elixir, so I'm starting to get my groove back. You can stream or direct download two of my old mixes--they are kinda long, but they'll give you an idea of some of the music I might play tonight. Live @ Laba Laba My earliest live "mix" back when I didn't have hardly any records of my own (not from 1991 as the page mistakenly says, but rather from around july 2004)... bikeclubosaka.com/audio/live_at_laba_laba_by_dj_el_gringo Live @ Oasis Lounge The only other live "mix" I've made (nothing special, mostly just songs placed end-to-end)... bikeclubosaka.com/audio/mind_mangle_part_01_by_dj_el_gringo Photo of Stone River and El Gringo by Prapatang Hunyaga. Sat, 13 December 2008 Get two for the price of one, no, make that four for the price of none! First of all, it's the monthly Flo-Union at The Pink Cow this Sunday. Second, it's also the Learn Japanese Pod Bonenkai (year-end party). Third, it's El Gringo's return to DJing after a 10-month hiatus. Fourth, it's Stone River's DJ debut at the Pink Cow.It all starts at 8:00 p.m. and there's absolutely NO COVER CHARGE. How can you stay away? Still not convinced? You can stream or direct download two of my mixes--they are kinda long, but they'll give you an idea of some of the music I might play on Sunday. I've added a lot of records and maybe some skillz as well since these live recordings were made almost 3 years ago, but them skillz is probably a bit rusty after such a long time off. Thu, 21 August 2008 The latest Headstand was a real treat and is now available for streaming. Patrick kicked off the show with Tic Tac Toe, a track by Auckland's cusp. (I'd like to think I had something to do with that). Later in the first hour of the show, he played News by Wellington's Jet Jaguar, who just performed here last weekend. Coincidence? I don't think so! He kicked off the second hour with a track from Kyoto resident Drew Moon, then bravely went where no radio DJ has probably ever been with a half-hour of Charles-Éric Billard--Osaka resident and NFTOS event anchor. Tonight, we are passing up seeing The Earlybirds at the Kings Arms, who we saw live when we first got to NZ, opting instead for Pecha Kucha Night at the Te Tuhi Center for the Arts out in Pakuranga. Makiko and I haven't attended before, so we thought we'd give it a try this time around. PKN_AKL_09 is a collaboration between Pecha Kucha Nights Auckland and Te Tuhi Centre for the Arts. It starts at 8:20 p.m. local time, doors open at 7:30 p.m. For full details, conatact Renée at 09 577 0138 or e-mail renee@tetuhi.org.nz Posted by Rob.

Mon, 11 August 2008 ![]() I'd be lying, if I said I wasn't just a tad bit excited about this weekend's compilation CD release party. So you don't have to get out a magnifying glass, the flyer reads: Jet Jaguar, Malty Media, Group Five, Bignificent D*. Saturday, 16 August, 7:00 p.m. $10 ($20 + CD) Khuja Lounge (Level 3, 536 Queen St). In even finer print, the music is described as "slippery slidey electronic, subaquatic bass and sampledelic funk. *("in a rare musical appearance!") This will be my first time to see the above artists in Auckland. I haven't gotten any details other than what you see on this flyer, and what has been posted on facebook, but I'm sure this is going to be a great gig, as I have had the privilege of seeing the two from Malty Media, Michael Upton (Jet Jaguar) and Stuart McDonald (Aquaboogie) in Japan. Michael also performed at two events I organized in Tokyo, one at the Pink Cow in Shibuya, and the other at Bar Bonobo in Jingu. If you're familiar with the NFTOS music catalogue, you'll know Jet Jaguar's track "Juicy" from Music From The Other Side #5, further back we made his track News available for download. If you still haven't made your mind up, check out this recent interview and live-to-air set from Radio Active. On it, Michael and Stuart talk about the Tokyo gig mentioned above, and played a good mixture of their own and their friends' music. It runs just under 30 minutes (25.5MB) and is well worth your time! Finally, I'm not sure where this piece of the puzzle fits, but Angry Rabbitz were also mentioned on the facebook announcement. I guess it's their label? Anyway, it's worth checking out 'cos there's music on it! See you there! Posted by Rob. Category: events -- posted at: 4:51 AM Comments[0] |

Fri, 25 July 2008 Tonight, four of us are going out to catch Phoenix Foundation member Samuel F. Scott & The Bunnies On Ponies (I think that's what they're called). That's kicking off in about 2 hours at the Whammy Bar on K Road. Opening act: White Swan Black Swan. Should be good craic. Bought the tickets at Real Groovy yesterday afternoon, for the not-so-bad-price of $15 each (can't even buy a caipirinha for less than that in this town!). Before the show we'll be checking out Tanuki's Cave (an izakaya on Queen Street) for some eats and drinks. Tomorrow we should finally be getting internet at home, so I won't have to keep on coming out to the library to check my e-mail, and that means I'll also be able to upload podcasts regularly again! Just in time too, because a terrible storm is on its way for the weekend... http://www.nzherald.co.nz/section/1/story.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10523423 Posted by Rob. P.S. Expect photos and/or video of the distruction, if we survive it! P.P.S. Tune in to Midnight Japan on Planet FM 104.6, Saturday night from 10:30 p.m., if the storm doesn't end up being so bad that we're not able to drive to the studio...

Mon, 5 May 2008 WARNING: Contains an offensive gesture. Also, please pardon the titles--Alex was just starting to mix his Spanish and Portuguese back then. Video and photos shot way back on 19 September 2005 at Osaka's Umeda Sky Building, during a festival that was officially labeled "Spanish" (or was it Mexican?) that turned out to be run mostly by Peruvians and Brazilians (which there are many of in Osaka). In this montage, which was shot with a cell phone and a digital camera, Alex pulls out all the post production editing stops he knew of at the time. This saved me from having to use all the same cheesy effects in my first videos! Thanks Alex! Music by Mono Blanco who performed that day. Wed, 26 December 2007 It's great to be back in Osaka! Makiko and I crashed the HiJak x-mas party at GARB on the 23rd, and I got to DJ a bit then. On Christmas Day, we explored the hills of northeastern Osaka, an area we'd never been to, near the Nara and Kyoto borders. The last few days, I've been hanging out with my pals Claire and Andrew (former Osaka residents and current world travelers). We've been dropping in on our favorite old haunts and pretending we never left. NFTOS regulars will be familiar with many of those old haunts from videos which bear their names, i.e. Chove Chuva (Brazilian music shop & cafe), Barbes (Bar & restaurant specializing in Cous cous and Pho), Kasu Udon (fantastic udon shop near Laba Laba), Cafe Absinthe (if you have to ask...), Omoni (Korean restaurant downstairs from Oasis Lounge) and Bar Uno (which you can see in Loop Line #5 of 8: http://www.newsfromtheotherside.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=255472 ). We've also been trying some new places too! Tonight I'll be DJing at Cafe Absinthe from about 8:00 p.m., then heading over to nearby Laba Laba (the first place I ever DJed) to hangout for the rest of the evening. I'll try to post the exact times here later today, before heading out. Right now I'm staying in Suminodo, in northeastern Osaka. At the moment I am enjoying an early morning cup of coffee and watching the sun come up over Mount Ikoma. Posted by Rob. Sun, 1 April 2007 Well, the opening party is over, but the post-disaster clean-up has yet to begin. DJ Pops (a.k.a. Shunsuke Kado) kicked things off right on time (maybe even a few minutes early) with a crunchy electro-turned-house-turned lounge set, while some artists were still setting up their works. Kira Kira Killa (a.ka. David Roy) splashed and daubbed an apocalyptic glow in the dark mural with the help of the Flying Koala (a.k.a. Okha Ryu). Billard & Brooke played some experimentalage and then introduced the Harmless Bard, Patrick Widdess. Then the technical difficulties began. Kim La Roc was forced to play her sassy latin-funk-hip hop blend with one CDJ player and one DiskMan... (To be continued / Time to make some more coffee / Three zombies snoring...) Wed, 7 March 2007 Nama is the title of our next artshow. So what is "NAMA" about? Well, it's NOT a new idea, and it's NOT the next big thing. It's a springboard for new ideas which will lead to that next big thing! To that challenge you thought you'd put yourself up to this year, but hadn't gotten around to yet. To some it may seem like we're re-inventing the wheel. Repeating the same words that have already been said a million billion trillion times except they're in a different order--remixed. To some it may be called recycling, reusing, recreating or just plain and simple--RECREATION--which it is! To others it may just look like spring cleaning--which [for me] it is somewhat. Out with the old, in with the new--again! There have been people throughout history who question whether or not there can be "anything new under the sun." There were those in the time of the Industrial Revolution who predicted the next major invention would be the last. And there are those who say our next stupid war... [But I'm not here to argue about that.] Just like scientists, artists can't let those kinds of prophecies keep us from our craft, from our dreams, from our visions and everything we do which makes us come alive! So, "NAMA" is just a starting point for where we're going next. And if you can't go there with us, you can still stay tuned for more News From The Other Side. Posted by Rob. Comments[0] |

Thu, 14 December 2006 How about an artshow in April, with an opening party on, say, the 21st? Okha and I have been mulling over the idea of having a show in Tokyo for quite sometime now, and the only way to make it happen is to say "It's going to happen!" Over in Nebraska, Peter Morris and Ed Mejia are cooking up something FRESH, an art magazine or a small design book or something. Since I don't want to get too scattered, I've decided to concentrate on one theme this spring, so we're kind of bandwagoning the title of their project. I'd like to call our show fresh too, only in Japanese. The "kanji," or Chinese character, for the word is pronounced "nama" in Japanese, and that's what our show is going to be called. This character can be used in a variety of ways, creating multiple meanings, so we'll be able to expand on the English definitions of "freshness." This is only the beginning yet really. I'm a last minute add-on as DJ and I'll be filling the after 10:00 p.m. till last train slot. Don't know what I'll spin yet. Christmas tunes? Fri, 8 December 2006 This podcast is actually a continuation of last Monday's Skype Conference Call between Alex, Makiko and Rob. In OSAKA, it's the LAST DAY of Charles Billard's exhibit at Gallery Flou! Unfortunately, we find ourselves in the grey and drizzly Tokyo today. Monsieur Billard's show brings together a series of collages, some of which were exhibited in France in a show called "Roots of Origin." More recent works deal with the idea of loss, symbolized by empty white spaces covering cryptic messages. The CLOSING event on December 9th is an attempt to push further the idea of collage, through the pairing of artists working in disciplines that seldom connect: Buyou dance and sanshin, African drum and abstract sound art, contemporary dance and classical Indian sitar... These are a few examples of what you can experience at the event. And don't forget to bring your own instrument, as there will be a collective jam session where everyone is welcome to join. Most of the text from this article was pilferred from Kansai Scene. Photo of Tokyo Tower by Alex who is back in the Tokyo area for a few days. Posted by Rob.Comments[0] |

Fri, 17 November 2006 Charles Billard has another artshow coming up soon in Osaka. We'll post more info about that later today. I also have more of Jerry's and his music to upload, but for now, please enjoy this .mp3 of an anonymous Englishman and an American trying to translate the Englishman's "favorite" French word into Japanese at an event held at l'Institut Franco-Japonais awhile back. Because sometimes things just get totally F%$#ING lost in translation. Posted by Rob.Comments[0] |
Thu, 9 November 2006 Last night, as I was approaching the foot of the hill in Ichigaya where L'Institut Franco-Japonais is located, there was an opening party spilling out onto the sidewalk in front of Gallery Space Pause. Inside, you could hear Korean, Japanese, French and broken English being spoken. The artists were students from the Ulsan University College of Fine Arts in Korea. My communication with the artists and Korean staff members was minimal, but luckily the title cards were in English as well as Korean for all their artwork and there was a catalog showing most of the artwork in the exhibition as well. I had been walking all over Meguro-ku earlier in the day, so I wasn't quite my usual genki self... Photo of Lee Jin Wook with untitled work. Posted by RobComments[2] |

Sun, 22 October 2006 NFTOS is planning an artshow for the spring of 2007. Everything is pretty much open and flexible at the moment, with nothing carved in stone.
Here's the idea: Something similar to the previous 3 NFTOS artshows held in Insadong (SEOUL), Noda and Taisho (OSAKA), only this time will be in TOKYO.
Here's where we're at in the planning process:
1. Location: Tokyo
Here's what's next:
2. Select Venue and decide on cost(s),
3. Determine number of participants,
4. Set Dates,
5. Choose Theme,
6. Set deadlines: *
7. Invite participants,
8. Create flyer/brochure,
9. Set up show,
10. Have opening party.
*There will be separate deadlines for receiving digital artwork or of photos of artwork for a flyer and/or brochure, creating the flyer, receiving artwork submissions, etc. Your input is welcome! Posted by Rob. Category: events -- posted at: 10:44 PM Comments[0] |
Sat, 21 October 2006 I heard from a reliable source in Osaka that Wes will be DJ'ing at Cafe Barbes tonight. I'm not sure who else will be joining him, but when we started doing regular gigs there together about a year-and-a-half ago, we were often joined by lounge DJs like Jules, Hitomi Nova and Satoshi. Cafe Barbes is a popular hangout for some of Osaka's hippest artists, DJs, filmmakers, musicians, photographers, etc. Here's a short .mp3 featuring DJs Akio and Wes on a night during the Horie Music Festival, which was also Halloween weekend, 29 Oct 2005. Tue, 10 October 2006 I'm uploading an .mp3 file that I recorded with Haqq last week. (We didn't have storage space, or I would've uploaded it before the show--sorry about that Haqq!). Several more segments will follow, maybe one every other day--wouldn't want to spoil the fun by giving it all away at once! In the meantime, here's a link to Underground Resistance label. Mon, 9 October 2006 Osaka photographer, musician and all-around artist John Harte has a show entitled "Wetdream Idols" running at the Littlemore Chika Gallery in Sendagaya, Tokyo, through 22 October. The nearest station is JR Harajuku Station. Exit the station near the Harajuku shopping street, on the "inside" of the Yamanote line and walk along the tracks until the road narrows and begins to veer away from the tracks a little (see map). If you get to the "Belle Epoque Beaty College," you've gone to far. They're open from noon until 7:00 p.m. Phone: 03-3401-1042. Posted by Rob. Category: events -- posted at: 10:28 PM Comments[0] |

Last night I met up with David, Kasumi and Yuka at Combine in Nakameguro last night. They are working on a monthly film contest which will debut this month. More on that soon! In this segment, we talked about Cornelius, who lives in Nakameguro, MC Solaar (he's an MC, not a DJ as I so erroneously stated), karaoke favorites, Morning Musume, Shina Ringo, Hamasaki Ayumi, Aiko, Shinohara Tomoe, and about what is going on around town this weekend, including a samba parade in Musashi Sakai. Wed, 31 May 2006 Jerry Gordon arrived in Osaka on 4 June 1994--Year of the Dog. Anyone on the Osaka art or performance scenes in the past 12 years has probably at least heard of him. Most recently, he was one of the directors of this year's [re]GARB event. I first started seeing his name pop up associated with the Voicebox poetry event. Check out some of his writing at moontriangle and at softlogicmonkey, and this musical collaboration with Charles Billard called Smouldering Door. Anyway, Sunday is 4 June 2006--Year of the Dog. To commemorate the completion of this calendar cycle, he says "I'm going to play music and read poetry and generally howl my thanks to the streets of Osaka for all of you folks who I have met and become friends with." The performance will run from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., on Sunday, 4 June 2006. It will happen in a narrow alley between two Yodoyobashi office buildings. Jerry describes the place as "a beautiful little urban canyon." The event is free, but please bring something to eat, drink and sit on. And, bring your own glass if you want to drink some Dog to Dog whiskey. If it's raining; the event is cancelled. Directions: From Yodoyobashi Station (Midosuji Subway / Red Line) go out either exit 9 or 12. The alley is one block south of Exit 9 and one block north of Exit 12. Posted by Rob. Wed, 31 May 2006 Late last summer, 19 September 2005 to be exact, a bunch of us went to a "Mexican Fiesta" under the Umeda Sky Building (which you can see in the Loop Line #2 and ALT Rap videos). At the fiesta, we ate prized dishes that are hard to come by in Osaka, bought CDs, straw hats and t-shirts. What I like most about this video is that it is old skool Alex Brooke at its best! Collaging mobile phone stills and video with editing tools he was just figuring out how to use. Blending English, Portuguese and Spanish text without blinking. It ain't pretty, but it's pretty funny, don't you think? Well, maybe you just had to be there. Oh, and sorry 'bout the obscene gesture--didn't think it was going to end up in a movie! Posted by Rob. Wed, 17 May 2006 Now don't get me wrong. I don't wanna diss Tokyo (yet). It's just that Covent Garden called me the other day to ask if I was still going to do an event I'd been scheduled to do in Osaka before I up and moved here, and then there's Oasis Lounge is hosting this event, Modest, which promises to be a lot of fun! I don't know the special guest DJ on the right of the flyer, but I believe those are cutouts of (L-R) Matt Duffy (a.k.a. DJ TripleByPass), DJ Joey and DJ Dimitri (owner-manager of Cafe Absinthe). Also, Oasis ownder Dan, bartender Shawn and Osaka house music icon I-Bec are all known to keep their music on hand and are apt to jump in unannounced from time to time. So, without a doubt, Osaka will be hoppin' this weekend! And, if you can't make it into town, then you can do like I'll be trying to do and tuning into Category: events -- posted at: 3:19 AM Comments[2] |
Sun, 14 May 2006 This just in from my father (sorry for associating your good name with this homepage, Dad) about my brother, who is a birdwatcher / amateur ornithologist: "Hans just called to give yesterday's report from Cape May, New Jersey. Its his second year in the WSB (World Series of Birding) representing the Maryland Ornithological Society. The competition is divided up into various categories, he has participated in the Cape May County listing along with 3 other "young turks" of the Maryland birding community. This is the second year the MOS has sponsored this team rather than the traditional "duffers". Last year the young turks came in second by 2 or 3 birds and the perennial winning team that is New Jersey based were worried that they might get beat in the near future. This year after a day of careful scouting, and going from just after midnight to 11:30 pm (nearly 24 hours) they racked up 179 species and in spite of missing several key rarities and having a very poor migration pattern, they took first place by 10 species even beating last year's first place by 2 species! It is the first time in over 10 years that the MOS has taken the trophy--so guess who's hyped up today? He said he was on his way to the awards meeting now and commented "so now we'll have to stand up in front everyone and receive the trophy" as though that was the hardest part of the whole adventure!" Links:
1. WSB winner rankings by category (fourth group listed).
2. Winner Cape May County (see 13th line on the list).
Footnote: After cleaning out their vehicle, Hans says he found 28 "energy drink" containers (ranging from 24 oz. cups of coffee, to 16 oz. Rock Stars, to 8-10 oz. Red Bulls, Cokes, Dr Peppers, etc). On Monday he called in sick, says he has a terrible headache. Dehydration?

Tue, 7 February 2006 (update 2/13) A bunch of us went to Basement Bar in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, to catch Osaka band Argyle in action. They were playing at two different venues on Saturday, and we went to the earlier of the two shows. Well, the opening party is over, but the post-disaster clean-up has yet to begin. (To be continued / Time to make some more coffee / Three zombies snoring...) Photo Charles in

Greetings from sunny Kagurazaka, Tokyo! It was kind of windy in the park, so if you can't hear something, or have any other questions, please comment below or e-mail me at robholbrook@mac.com . Here's a bunch of info for the performers of our 1 April opening party.
The homepage for the Nama art event is now up. Hoorah !
It's early Saturday morning here in Tokyo. Just 21 days till the Nama art show begins on Sunday, 1 April 2007! Here are some links off the top of my head of some of the artist participating in the event:
Nama is the title of our next artshow. So what is "NAMA" about? Well, it's NOT a new idea, and it's NOT the next big thing. It's a springboard for new ideas which will lead to that next big thing! To that challenge you thought you'd put yourself up to this year, but hadn't gotten around to yet.
This is the idea for the flyer that Craig Schultz is working on now. Nama artshow participants, please send him .jpegs of your artwork to the address I sent in the last e-mail, so they can be added to the collage! Posted by Rob.
I'll be DJ'ing from around 8:30 or 9:00 p.m. till the last train (if I leave right at midnight, there's plenty of time to catch it, including the 10-15 minute walk to the station). There's no cover charge, so DRINK UP! If you get hungry, the neighborhood is full of little food joints...

How about an artshow in April, with an opening party on, say, the 21st? Okha and I have been mulling over the idea of having a show in Tokyo for quite sometime now, and the only way to make it happen is to say "It's going to happen!"
Tonight! Tuesday, 12 December 2006. See the flyer to the right for links and details. I'm a last minute add-on as DJ and I'll be filling the after 10:00 p.m. till last train slot. Don't know what I'll spin yet. Christmas tunes? Probably not, but I assure you, the mood will be festive yet UNPREDICTIBLE! Posted by Rob a.k.a.

Last night, as I was approaching the foot of the hill in Ichigaya where L'Institut Franco-Japonais is located, there was an opening party spilling out onto the sidewalk in front of Gallery Space Pause. Posted by Rob

This just in from my father (sorry for associating your good name with this homepage, Dad) about my brother, who is a birdwatcher / amateur ornithologist: "Hans just called to give yesterday's report from Cape May, New Jersey. He said he was on his way to the awards meeting now and commented "so now we'll have to stand up in front everyone and receive the trophy" as though that was the hardest part of the whole adventure!" There's going to be a Brazilian art & music "festa" tomorrow afternoon at Chove Chuva in Higobashi, Osaka. Chove Chuva is a cafe and music store that specializes in all genres of Brazilian music. It is the unofficial home to several local bands and live performances are hosted there weekly. Chove Chuva is just north of Utsubo Park. The best way to get there is from exit #7 of Higobashi Station. From there, walk south along Yotsubashi Street past the Ehime Prefecture Tourism Center and East China Airlines. Turn right at the light just after Yoshinoya Restaurant and walk two blocks past Loco George's Second Hand Goods. Take your first left. Chove Chuva is upstairs from Earth Cafe. You can't miss the Brazilian flag waving from the second floor. Enjoy music from DJs Hitomi Nova, El Gringo, Wes, Dainari, Tatsumi and others! Poster art by Peter Morris. (update 2/13) A bunch of us went to Basement Bar in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, to catch Osaka band Argyle in action. They were playing at two different venues on Saturday, and we went to the earlier of the two shows. He did pretty well for himself, and we all agreed that they rocked! Argyle's next gig will be March 20th at the Barbes Anniversary Party held in Club Noon, Umeda. Check out Argyle's website for more
